Japan Foals Day-1: US$2.056m Deep Impact Colt
Takaya Shimakawa paid top price of ¥220 million (US$2.056m) for a colt from the 1st-crop of multiple Gr1-winner & dual Japanese Horse-Of-The-Year Deep Impact (out of Gr1-winning 15-year-old Caerleon mare Biwa Heidi) during yesterday's middle session at the 3-day Japan Racing Horse Association July select Sale (1 day of yearlings now followed by 2 days of foals) at the Northern Horse Park on the island of Hokkaido. The colt (consigned by Northern Farm) is a 3/4-brother to stakes-winners Admire Japan & Admire Aura, while his dam Biwa Heidi was Japan's champion 2YO filly on the track. Japanese Triple Crown winner Deep Impact (Sunday Silence-Wind In Her Hair, by Alzao) covered 230 mares in his 1st season at stud; the 6YO super stayer (who won 12 of his 14 starts & earned US$12.825m on the track) was syndicated in early 2007 for a Japanese record ¥5.1 billion (then US$42.7m).
