Newspaper Slams Victorian Racing "Shenanigans"

Thursday, 17th July 2008

Under the provocative headline "Victorian Racing Perilously Placed", columnist Patrick Smith declared bluntly in The Australian newspaper: "The Australian racing community must be eyeing the shenanigans in Victoria with a wary eye. There are inquiries into inquiries. Racing Victoria is looking into an investigation that seemed inexplicably to hit a brick wall. The Victorian Government has ordered an inquiry about just how race authorities go about their investigations. . . . . The investigators scrutinise those exploring the probe, which is an examination of those checking into the assessment of the inquiry which unsuccessfully monitored the delving into the results of the initial research." Whew! In the ensuing 20 paragraphs Smith blasts with both barrels, noting: "All this while the very future of the Victorian industry - and by extension that of every other state and territory - is perilously placed. Critics are so thick in the stalls that they must take a ticket to line up & shout their concerns."
