North Qld Hendra Death Not Connected To Brisbane Case

Thursday, 17th July 2008

The Australian Racing Board confirmed a horse which died in Cannonvale in northern Queensland over the weekend from the rare Hendra virus, but Biosecurity Queensland chief veterinary officer Dr Ron Glanville reported the case "is completely unrelated to the recent cases at a vet practice in Brisbane". Glanville added there was "no cause for alarm" noting: "There are more than half a million horses in Queensland & although Hendra cases are still rare, some cases are expected periodically. Fortunately, Hendra virus does not spread like equine influenza & is very difficult to catch. The horse at Cannonvale has no connection to the vet practice in Brisbane & all scientific evidence at the moment points to the timing being a coincidence."
