1st US Winner For Freshman Champ Smarty Jones

A week after recording his 1st 2YO winner in Puerto Rico, multiple Gr1-winning US 7YO freshman sire & dual classic-winning champion Smarty Jones (Elusive Quality-I'll Get Along, by Smile) recorded his 1st US winner when 2YO son Keefer (Smarty Jones-Shootforthestars, by Seattle Slew) scored on debut over 5 furlongs at Monmouth Park in New Jersey for trainer Steve Asmussen, reported bloodhorse.com. Keefer (bred in Kentucky by Swettenham Stud) was a US$60,000 yearling at the 2007 Keeneland September Sale. Smarty Jones stands for US$100,000 at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky & has 83 2YOs in his 1st crop. Pennsylvania-bred Smarty Jones won the 2004 US Gr1 Kentucky Derby & Gr1 Preakness Stakes to claim the Eclipse Award for champion 3YO male; his only loss in 9 starts came when runner-up in the Gr1 Belmont Stakes. Smarty Jones opened his 3YO season with 6 consecutive stakes wins (also including the Gr2 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park) & overall earned US$7,613,155.
