Betfair "Closer To Deal" With US Horsemen

Tuesday, 22nd July 2008

UK-based online betting exchange Betfair "continues to negotiate with officials in the US & is inching closer to a deal by which it would compensate horsemen for use of their product," reported bloodhorse.com. Currently Betfair does not not accept wagers from US residents, but it takes bets on US races from players in other countries, including Canada. However Betfair officials attended the weekend's US National Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association 3-day convention in Pennsylvania & "have been in talks with the Thoroughbred Horsemen's Group, which is attempting to increase purse revenue from pari-mutuel wagering". Betfair's US representative Christian Hellmers confirmed: "We're actively negotiating with the THG. We hope to be able to reach an agreement soon. We're focusing on the US right now. We're investing more resources. We're in the 4th quarter of our negotiations with the THG."
