Monzante Wins US Gr1 Eddie Read Handicap

Tuesday, 22nd July 2008

In the US, 4YO gelding Monzante (Maria's Mon-Danzante, by Danzig) "unleashed a determined rally from last in the field" to "power past his foes with an explosive stretch bid & gamely prevail" by a half-length in the US$400,000 Gr1 Eddie Read Handicap (9 furlongs on turf) at Del Mar in California, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Monzante (ridden by Rafael Bejarano for trainer Mike Mitchell) defeated Irish-bred multiple graded stakes-winner Whatsthescript (Royal Applause-Grizel, by Lion Cavern) & front-running Argentine champion miler Storm Military (Bernstein-Shy Mandona, by Shy Tom). Bred in Kentucky by Juddmonte Farms, Monzante initially raced in the UK where (after 6 starts) he had an all-weather Timeform rating of 107 before selling for 100,000 guineas (A$220,000) at the 2007 UK Tattersalls July Sale. Last month he finished runner-up by a neck in the US Gr1 Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap (10 furlongs on turf) at Hollywood Park, after winning March's Listed Santana Mile Handicap (8 furlongs) at Santa Anita. Overall Monzante now has 4 wins from 13 starts for US$449,570 earnings.
