US Horsemen Approve Model Rules Working Group
Meanwhile the US National Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association's board of directors voted "to create a model rules working group that would engage in dialogue with the Association Of Racing Commissioners International's rule-making committee to craft regulations that meet the needs of horse owners & trainers," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. And the NHBPA board also approved "a 7-member committee that will evaluate proposed model rules & then seek comment & suggestions from horsemen across North America". With the on-going spectre of last month's US Congress hearing now threatening imminent follow-up action over thoroughbred industry safety, drug use & horse welfare, the NHBPA board emphasised it "believes the racing industry is still the best source for finding ways to improve & regulate welfare & safety in racing & our challenge will be to shepherd all sensible proposals from the recommendation phase to the rule-adoption phase. It is this role the NHBPA intends to undertake in order for our industry to better safeguard our horses & riders."
