In the US, trainer Doug O'Neill & co-owner Steve Kenly confirmed 7-time Gr1-winning 7YO gelding Lava Man (Slew City Slew-Li'l Ms Leonard, by Nostalgia's Star) "one of the leading handicap horses in the nation during the past 4 years, has been unofficially retired" after finishing last in Sunday's Gr1 Eddie Read Handicap (9 furlongs on turf) at Del Mar in California, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Lava Man (claimed for just US$50,000 4 seasons ago) retires with 17 wins (including the Gr1 Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap 3 times, Gr1 Santa Anita Handicap twice, Gr1 Pacific Classic Stakes & Gr1 Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap) from 46 starts for US$5,268,706 earnings.
