On-Line Bookies Challenge Vic Advertising Laws

Thursday, 24th July 2008

Sportingbet Australia & Betfair have begun a 2nd legal challenge in the Federal Court Of Australia against the validity of state advertising laws. After launching proceedings against the NSW Government earlier this month, they have now also challenged Victorian laws that prevent interstate licensed wagering companies from advertising in the state. Sportingbet Australia chief executive Michael Sullivan commented: "We believe this legislation is fundamentally flawed & it contradicts the spirit of business in Australia by restricting fair & open trade between the states. At a grass roots level, the Victorian advertising ban against interstate wagering operators blocks the punter from seeing all the options available. We pay a fee to the Victorian racing industry & we are asking for the right to compete on a level playing field."
