Galileo Adds Irish Gr3 Quinella
In Europe overnight, former Coolmore shuttler & Gr1 English Derby winner Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) added an Irish juvenile group quinella when Ballydoyle's unbeaten colt Rip Van Winkle (Galileo-Looking Back, by Stravinsky) finished strongly from the rear of the field to score a 1.25-lengths victory in the €70,000 (A$119,000) Gr3 Tyros Stakes (7 furlongs) for 2YOs at Leopardstown. Rip Van Winkle (ridden by Johnny Murtagh for trainer Aidan O'Brien) defeated previously unbeaten favoured filly Cius Ghaire (Galileo-Scribonia, by Danehill) & fellow colt Vilasol (Verglas-Pitrizza, by Machiavellian). Rip Van Winkle now has 2 wins from 2 starts & "rocketed to favouritism for the UK Gr1 2000 Guineas in 2009 after serving Royal Ascot heroine Cuis Ghaire with the 1st defeat in 4 starts," reported racingpost.co.uk.
