Commentator Wins US Gr1 Whitney Handicap

On the US track, former Grand Lodge Thoroughbreds shuttler Distorted Humor (Forty Niner-Danzig's Beauty, by Danzig) added a Gr1 triumph when top-weighted 7YO gelding Commentator (Distorted Humor-Outsource, by Storm Bird) continued his scintillating form this season with a front-running 4.75-lengths victory in the US$750,000 Gr1 Whitney Handicap (9 furlongs) at Saratoga in New York, 3 years after also winning this same race in 2005. Commentator (ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Nick Zito) defeated multiple Gr1-winning 6YO entire Student Council (Kingmambo-Class Kris, by Kris S) with a further 8.5-lengths back to Grasshopper (Dixie Union-Grass Skirt, by Mr Prospector). Earlier this season New-York-bred Commentator blew away his competition with a front-running 14-lengths victory & new course record for 8 furlongs at Florida's Gulfstream Park in January & then followed-up with a 13.75-lengths slaughter of his rivals in the Gr2 Richter Scale Sprint Handicap (7 furlongs) at Gulfstream in March. In May he carried top-weight to finish runner-up in the Gr1 Metropolitan Mile Handicap (8 furlongs) at Belmont Park in New York & overall Commentator now has 12 wins (6 stakes, also including 2005's Gr1 Whitney Handicap over 9 furlongs at Saratoga, 2006's Listed Mugatea Stakes by 6.25 lengths over 6.5 furlongs at Belmont Park & 2007's Listed Richmond Runner stakes by 11.25-lengths also over 6.5 furlongs at Belmont, plus a placing in 2005's Gr1 Woodward Stakes) from 19 starts for US$1,541,936 earnings.
