Ginger Punch Wins US Gr1 Go For Wand Handicap
Stronach Stables multiple Gr1-winning home-bred 5YO mare & 2007's champion older female Ginger Punch (Awesome Again-Nappelon, by Bold Revenue) made it 3 successive graded-stakes victories with a 1.25-lengths victory in the US$250,000 Gr1 Go For Wand Handicap (9 furlongs) for fillies & mares at Saratoga, to also claim this race for the 2nd year in succession. Hot favourite Ginger Punch (ridden by Rafael Bejarano for trainer Bobby Frankel) defeated stakes-winner Copper State (Jump Start-Orrefor, by Our Native) & Gr3-winner Indescribable (Pleasant Tap-Catnip, by Flying Paster). At her previous start, Ginger Punch blitzed her rivals by 7.75-lengths in June's Gr1 Ogden Phipps Handicap (8.5 furlongs) at Belmont Park; & earlier this season she won the Sunshine Million Distaff Stakes & Gr2 Louisville Stakes, plus finishing 3rd in April's Gr1 Apple Blossom Handicap (8.5 furlongs) at Oaklawn Park. Last season Ginger Punch won the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Distaff (9 furlongs) at Monmouth Park, Gr1 Ruffian Handicap (8.5 furlongs) at Belmont, Gr1 Go For Wand Handicap (9 furlongs) at Saratoga & Gr2 First Flight Handicap at Belmont, as well as finishing 2nd in the Gr1 Ogden Phipps Handicap, 3rd in the Gr1 Beldame Stakes (9 furlongs) at Belmont & 2nd in the Gr2 Vinery Madison Stakes at Keeneland.
