5,000 Wins To US Jockey Desormeaux

Tuesday, 29th July 2008

US jockey Kent Desormeaux "became the 23rd North American rider to earn 5,000 career victories" when he rode favoured 5YO mare Bella Attrice to a 2.25-lengths victory over 8 furlongs at Saratoga in New York for trainer Bruce Brown, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Desormeaux, 38, has won 3 US Eclipse Awards during a riding career that began in 1986 at Evangeline Downs in Louisiana: he was named North America's outstanding apprentice rider in 1987 & added Eclipse Awards as outstanding jockey in 1989 & 1992. Desormeaux, Chris McCarron & Steve Cauthen are the only jockeys to win Eclipse Awards as both an apprentice & senior jockey. Desormeaux (who was also inducted into the US Racing Hall-Of-Fame in 2004) led all North American riders by wins in 1987, 1988 & 1989 (in the latter setting a North American record 599 victories). This year he won both the Gr1 Kentucky Derby & Gr1 Preakness Stakes on Big Brown.
