O'Reilly Leads Zabeel For NZ Dewar Award
In New Zealand, the "tide looks to have turned for the final time in the titanic Dewar Award battle" (for 2008's champion NZ-based sire by combined earnings in Australia & NZ) between Waikato Stud sire O'Reilly (Last Tycoon-Courtza, by Pompeii Court) & Cambridge Stud's multiple champion sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram-Lady Giselle, by Nureyev) declared NZ Thoroughbred Marketing. Last Friday "a miniscule margin of $12,569 separated the pair, with Zabeel having made significant inroads towards a 13th consecutive Dewar Award with 2 winners & 3 Australian place-getters earlier that week". However with 2 significant winners & a place-getter emerging for O'Reilly in Australia over the weekend, the "Dewar pendulum has swung strongly back into the favour of the Waikato Stud sire. Pulling out the big guns in the nick of time, O'Reilly has shot to a $72,389 advantage, a buffer that can be largely credited to the Garry Chittick-bred pair O'Crikey & Escadaire. Leading the way, O'Crikey added $42,500 to his sire's earnings tally with a smart win in the AJC Might And Power Handicap (1250m), a result echoed by Glamour Puss' half-brother Escadaire, who collected $32,500 after taking out the WATC French Sound Handicap (1200m)."
