Public Consultation On NZ Racing Rules Review

Tuesday, 29th July 2008

NZ Thoroughbred Racing announced "the commencement of a period public consultation on the Rules Of Racing" until August 22. Chief executive Paul Bittar explained: "NZTR began this review & re-drafting of the Rules Of Racing early last year & we are aiming to conclude the whole process & bring any new Rules into effect by April 2009. Our aims are 3-fold: to develop Rules that are more simple & logical than those currently in use; to ensure that the Rules are written in plain English; & to ensure that the industry maintains a high level of integrity. With close to 400 Rules to review containing over 130,000 words - compared, for example, to around 55,000 words in the combined Australian & Local (State) Rules - this is a huge undertaking. To date NZTR management has worked closely with the NZTR Integrity Committee & our legal advisers Bell Gully & consulted with the NZ Racing Board & members of the Judicial Control Authority. We are now seeking the views of the public, based on a working draft of the proposed amended Rules."
