Maryland Yearlings Day-1: Average Down 33.3%
Overall on Day-1 in Maryland, thoroughbredtimes.com summed up bluntly: "On the same day the Dow Jones industrial average dropped a record 777 points, the picture was no brighter at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern fall yearling sale, which saw total sales drop 34.8% compared with the opening session last year." A total of 171 yearlings sold (from 264 offered) for US$2,783,400 (down from 175 sold last year for US$4,269,800). The US$16,277 average fell 33.3% (last year US$24,399) though the median remained steady at US$10,000. Fasig-Tipton chairman Walt Robertson commented: "It's a tough world, especially this segment of the market. It's not fun."
