Soviet Star Adds UK Black-Type

Tuesday, 7th October 2008

Former NZ Haunui Stud shuttler Soviet Star (Nureyev-Veruschka, by Venture) added a UK black-type success when Australian owner Peter McMahon's 4YO entire Buccellati (Soviet Star-Susi Wong, by Selkirk) scored a 1.25-lengths victory in the £44,000 (A$92,000) Listed Godolphin Stakes (12 furlongs) at Newmarket. Buccellati (ridden by William Buick for trainer Andrew Balding) defeated Irish-bred 5YO gelding Classic Punch (Mozart-Rum Cay, by Our Native) & fellow 4YO entire Speed Gifted (Montjeu-Good Standing, by Distant View). Back in 2005 McMahon & Australian trainer Tony Noonan made the trip to the UK seeking to buy a potential Melbourne Cup contender; they bought 2 youngsters at Tattersalls, including Buccellati for 25,000 guineas (A$55,000) & this time last year he completed a winning hat-trick with victory against older horses in the ladbrokes.com Stakes (12 furlongs) at Ascot. Overall Buccellati now has 6 wins & a runner-up from 18 starts for £153,809 (A$322,000) earnings.
