In France, The Aga Khan's Irish home-bred 3YO filly Zarkava (Zamindar-Zarkasha, by Kahyasi) claimed the world's richest race on grass & maintained her unbeaten record of 7 successive victories by powering home from back in the field for a 2-lengths triumph against a star-studded lineup of older rivals in the €4 million (A$6.8m) Gr1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (2400m) at Longchamp in Paris. Zarkava (ridden by Christophe Soumillon for trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre) defeated fellow Irish-bred multiple Gr1-winning 5YO entire Youmzain (Sinndar-Sadima, by Sadler's Wells) who finished runner-up for the 2nd successive year & dead-heating Irish-bred Gr1-winning 4YO entire Soldier Of Fortune (Galileo-Affianced, by Erin's Isle) & German-bred Gr2-winning & multiple Gr1-placed 5YO entire It's Gino (Perugino-Imelda, by Lomitas). Zarkava (racing against males for the 1st time) became the 1st filly since Urban Sea in 1993 to win the Arc. At her previous start Zarkava won September's French Gr1 Prix Vermeille (2400m) against older rivals at Longchamp & previously this season she also won France's Gr1 Prix De Diane-French Oaks (2100m) at Chantilly, Gr1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches-1000 Guineas (1600m) at Longchamp & Gr3 Prix De La Grotte (1600m) at Longchamp. Last year Zarkava won France's Gr1 Prix Marcel Boussac (1600m) at Longchamp & overall now has 7 wins (5 Gr1s) from 7 starts for £2,463,140 (A$5.172m) earnings.
