US Champ & 81-SW Sire Cozzene Dies At 28
In the US, veteran stallion Cozzene (Gr1 Breeders' Cup winner & champion turf male of 1985 and subsequently sire of 81 stakes-winners, including 2 Gr1 Breeders' Cup winners) was euthanased at the Beck family's Gainesway Farm in Kentucky "because of failing health" aged 28, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Cozzene (Caro-Ride the Trails, by Prince John) covered 38 mares in the 2008 season while standing for a private fee. In 19 crops of racing age, Cozzene (who stood his entire career at Gainesway) sired 540 winners from 724 starters that have earned US$80,190,795; his star progeny include: 1994 Gr1 Breeders' Cup Turf winner Tikkanen; 1996 Gr1 Breeders' Cup Classic winner Alphabet Soup; Japanese champion Admire Cozzene; Canadian champions Cozzene's Prince, Hasten To Add & Santa Amelia; 1993 Gr1 Arlington Million Stakes winner Star Of Cozzene; & 1991 UK Gr1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes winner Environment Friend. Cozzene is 1 of only 3 Breeders' Cup winners to sire more than 1 Breeders' Cup winner (along with Awesome Again & Unbridled); Alphabet Soup's victory in the 1996 Gr1 Breeders' Cup Classic at Woodbine helped Cozzene rank 2nd on that season's North American general sire list. On the track himself, Florida-bred Cozzene won 10 of 24 starts (including the 1985 Gr1 Breeders' Cup Mile at Aqueduct in his final start, plus 3rd in the inaugural Gr1 Breeders' Cup Mile at Hollywood Park in 1984) & earned US$978,152.
