US Hall-Of-Fame Mare Princess Rooney Euthanased
US Racing Hall-Of-Fame racemare Princess Rooney (Verbatim-Parrish Princess, by Drone) was euthanased at Gentry Farm in Kentucky "because of the effects of Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis" aged 28, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Princess Rooney (inducted into the Racing Hall-OF-Fame in 1991) won 17 of 21 starts (including 5 Gr1 victories); in her best season as a 4YO she won the Gr1 Vanity Handicap, Gr1 Spinster Stakes & inaugural Gr1 Breeders' Cup Distaff at Hollywood Park to earn the 1984 Eclipse Award as champion older female. She was subsequently sold for US$5.5 million at the 1985 Keeneland November breeding stock sale (at the time, the 3rd-highest price ever paid for a broodmare at public auction). Princess Rooney produced 7 starters who earned US$377,640 & was pensioned after failing to produce foals in 2005 & 2006.
