Encosta Colt Sets Canterbury Track Record

Friday, 10th October 2008

Coolmore stallion & current Australian champion sire Encosta de Lago (Fairy King-Shoal Creek by Star Way) added an exciting new winner when 3YO colt Northern Meteor (Encosta de Lago-Explosive, by Fappiano) set a course record at Canterbury Park in Sydney for trainer Gai Waterhouse. Northern Meteor (owned by Eduardo Cojuangco's Gooree Stud) blitzed his rivals by 4.25-legths, clocking 1min 12.47sec over 1250m (to break the track record by 0.2sec). Northern Meteor is a 3/4-brother to Gr3 Gloaming Stakes winner Fight And Defend, as well as a half-brother to multiple Gr3-winner Queen of The Hill & Gooree Stud's Andrew Baddock told The Daily Telegraph he "could be a possible Gr1 Ascot Vale Stakes contender" (at Flemington next month) noting: "We have always had a very high opinion of this colt, so to see him win so easily & set a course record in the process, tells us he is pretty good. Last season we thought he was a Golden Slipper horse & he was still unraced when entered for the Todman Slipper, but he went shin sore in the week of that race."
