Alamosa Wins Gr1 Toorak Handicap

NZ Waikato Stud's champion NZ stallion O'Reilly (Last Tycoon-Courtza, by Pompeii Court) celebrated a Gr1 triumph when last season's NZ Champion 3YO & now 4YO entire Alamosa (O'Reilly-Lodore Mystic, by Centaine) scored a 1.75-lengths victory in the $350,000 Gr1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield. Alamosa (ridden by Craig Newitt for trainer Mick Price) defeated 4YO gelding Rockwood (Rock Of Gibraltar-Foxwood, by Centaine) & fellow 4YO entire Pillar Of Hercules (Rock Of Gibraltar-Coat, by Brocco). Alamosa (a NZ$60,000 yearling at the 2006 NZB Premier Sale at Karaka) now has 10 wins (also including a track record in defeating older rivals in February's Gr1 Otaki-Maroi WFA over 1600m at Otaki, plus both January's the Gr1 Thorndon Mile over 1600m at Trentham & Gr3 Wellington Stakes over 1600m at Trentham, as well as 2007's Gr1 Ford Diamond Stakes over 1200m at Ellerslie, Gr2 Avondale Guineas over 1600m & Gr2 Hawke's Bay Guineas over 1400m at Hastings, & 2006's Listed Wellesley Stakes over 1000m at Hastings) & 5 placings (including the Gr1 NZ 2000 Guineas over 1600m at Riccarton Park, Gr1 Ford Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes over 1400m at Awapuni, Gr2 Wellington Guineas over 1500m at Trentham & Listed Welcome Stakes over 1000m at Riccarton Park) from 21 starts for $876,827 earnings.
