Douro Valley Wins Gr1 Yalumba Stakes

Monday, 13th October 2008

Coolmore stallion & last season's Australia champion sire Encosta de Lago (Fairy King-Shoal Creek, by Star Way) added a Gr1 triumph (& 13th individual Gr1 winner) when 7YO gelding Douro Valley (Encosta de Lago-Opaque, by Lord Seymour) prevailed in a 3-way photo-finish to the $400,000 weight-for-age Gr1 Yalumba Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield. Douro Valley (ridden by James Winks for trainer Danny O'Brien) scored by a neck from favoured 6YO gelding Pompeii Ruler (Genuine-West With Night, by Pompeii Court) with a further short-head to 4YO entire Guillotine (Montjeu-Refused The Dance, by Defensive Play). Douro Valley took his record to 8 wins (also including 2007's Listed Naturalism Stakes over 2000m at Caulfield) & 14 placings (including February's Gr2 St George Stakes over 1800m at Caulfield, plus 2007's Gr1 Caulfield Cup over 2400m & Listed Chubb Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield, as well as 2006's Gr3 Eclipse Stakes over 1800m at Sandown) from 48 starts for $1,157,091 earnings.
