Giant's Causeway Adds US Gr3

Tuesday, 14th October 2008

Also in the US, former Coolmore shuttler Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat-Mariah's Storm, by Rahy) added a group success when Stonerside Stable home-bred colt Cowboy Cal (Giants Causeway-Texas Tammy, by Seeking The Gold) was 2nd-past-the-post by a head but awarded victory for "repeated interference in the stretch" by Seaspeak in the US$150,000 Gr3 Bryan Station Stakes (8 furlongs on turf) for 3YOs at Keeneland in Kentucky. After a stewards' inquiry, Cowboy Cal (ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Todd Pletcher) officially defeated fellow colt Seaspeak (Mizzen Mast-Somerset West, by Gone West) & the gelding Deal Making (Empire Maker-Recording, by Danzig). Cowboy Cal (in his 1st start since finishing 9th in the Gr1 Kentucky Derby on May 3) took his record to 4 wins from 8 starts; previously this season he won January's Gr3 Tropical Park Derby (9 furlongs on turf) for 3YOs at Calder & finished runner-up in both February's Listed Hallandale Beach Stakes (8.5 furlongs) at Gulfstream Park & April's Gr1 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (9 furlongs on all-weather) at Keeneland. And last season as a 2YO, Cowboy Cal also won the Listed Laurel Futurity (8.5 furlongs on turf) at Laurel Park.
