Racing Victoria stewards announced Brian Mayfield-Smith's 6YO gelded stayer & 2006 Gr1 Melbourne Cup 3rd-placed Maybe Better (Intergaze-Amarula, by Rubiton) has been retired after X-rays revealed "2 bone chips to the off-fore fetlock & a weakness in the cannon bone that could lead to a fracture". Maybe Better finished last (carrying top-weight) in Saturday's Gr2 Winning Edge Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield. Overall Maybe Better recorded 6 wins (including 2006's Gr3 SAAB Quality over 2500m at Flemington, Gr3 Coongy Handicap over 2000m at Caulfield & Listed Japan Trophy over 2000m at Flemington) & 5 placings (also including 2006's Listed D'Urban Quality Stakes over 1700m at Caulfield, plus 2005's Gr2 Stutt Stakes over 1600m at Moonee Valley & & Listed Vain Stakes over 12090m at Caulfield) from 29 starts for $955,600 earnings.
