NZ Gr2-Winner Irlanda Retired To Stud

Wednesday, 15th October 2008

In New Zealand, Gr2-winning 5YO mare Irlanda (O'Reilly-Cenphic, by Centaine) has been retired to stud, after a heart irregularity was found subsequent to her contesting last Saturday's Gr3 Stoney Bridge Stakes at Hawera. Part-owner Rob Burnet told NZ Thoroughbred Marketing: "After 3 runs this season without her usual sprint, it was decided to examine her back at the stable & a heart murmur was discovered." Irlanda (a NZ$38,000 yearling at the 2005 NZB Select Sale at Karaka) notched 6 wins (including 2007's Gr2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes over 1400m at Ellerslie & Listed Lion Red Plate over 1200m at Arawa Park, plus 2006's Gr3 Eulogy Stakes over 1600m at Awapuni) & 5 placings (including both 2007's Gr1 NZB Breeders' Stakes over 1600m at Te Aroha & Gr2 Eight Carat Classic over 1600m at Ellerslie) from 20 starts for NZ$300,125 earnings. Burnet added: "No decision has been made yet on a stallion for her to visit this season, but we are considering several options on both sides of the Tasman."
