UK Star Phoenix Tower Retired To Stud

Wednesday, 15th October 2008

In the UK, Prince Khalid Abdulla's Juddmonte Farms US-bred 4YO entire Phoenix Tower (Chester House-Bionic, by Zafonic) "has been retired from racing after sustaining a tendon injury while being prepared for Saturday's UK Gr1 Champion Stakes at Newmarket," reported the-racehorse.com. Phoenix Tower was unbeaten in his initial 4 starts & then finished runner-up in 4 successive UK Gr1 races this year: May's Gr1 Lockinge Stakes (8 furlongs) at Newbury, June's Gr1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes (10 furlongs) at Royal Ascot, July's Gr1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes (10 furlongs) at Sandown & August's Gr1 Juddmonte International Stakes (10 furlongs) at Newmarket. Juddmonte racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe confirmed: "Scans this morning showed a small tear in the tendon which represented an unacceptable risk. The colt has now been retired from racing. Obviously it is disappointing, as we were really looking forward to the weekend & he would have had a great chance. He was in really good form & it is a real shame as if ever a horse deserved to win a Gr1, it was him. We will have to have a chat about where he will stand at stud, but nothing has been decided on that yet."
