Churchill Bans Toe Grabs At Its 4 US Tracks

Thursday, 16th October 2008

Meanwhile Churchill Downs "implemented a new horseshoe policy & banned toe grabs longer than 2mm at all 4 of its tracks," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. The new policy bans "all toe grabs, bends, jar calks, stickers & any other traction device worn on a horse's front shoes"; also all "hind shoes with a turndown of more than 1/4-inch will be banned on dirt tracks". The policy has gone into effect immediately at Churchill Downs (Kentucky), Calder Race Course (Miami), Arlington Park (Chicago) & Fair Grounds (Illinois). Churchill senior vice president of racing Donnie Richardson commented: "Our change in policy is another positive step toward improving the welfare & safety of our equine & human athletes & it's consistent with the recommendations of The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Safety Committee, Thoroughbred Action Committee & Kentucky Horse Racing Commission to address safety in horse racing."
