Intense Focus Wins UK Gr1 Dewhurst Stakes

Monday, 20th October 2008

Also in the UK, former Coolmore shuttler Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat-Mariah's Storm, by Rahy) added a juvenile Gr1 triumph when US-bred colt Intense Focus (Giant's Causeway-Daneleta, by Danehill) gained the verdict in a 3-way photo-finish to the £270,000 (A$567,000) Gr1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes (7 furlongs) for 2YOs at Newmarket. Intense Focus (also ridden by Kevin Manning for trainer Jim Bolger) squeezed through a gap in the final furlong to score by a nose from fast-finishing fellow US-bred colt Lord Shanakill (Speightstown-Green Room, by Theatrical) with a further nose to front-running colt Finjaan (Royal Applause-Alhufoof, by Dayjur). Previously this season, Intense Focus finished runner-up in June's UK Gr2 Coventry Stakes (6 furlongs) at Royal Ascot & then 3rd a fortnight later in June's Irish Gr2 Railway Stakes (6 furlongs) at The Curragh, & most recently finished 3rd earlier this month in France's Gr1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere/Grand Criterium (1400m) at Longchamp. Intense Focus was a €340,000 (A$578,000) Goffs purchase & overall now has 2 wins & 4 placings from 9 starts for £334,357 (A$702,000) earnings.
