Kentucky Sires Down 4.5% & Mares-Bred Down 1.9%

The US Jockey Club's latest Report Of Mares Bred also provides a region-by-region analysis of breeding trends. Kentucky's 318 stallions covered 21,317 mares: 40.7% of all of the mares reported as bred in North America. However those figures represented a 4.5% fall in stallion numbers (from 333 in 2007) & a 1.9% fall in mares-bred (from 21,724 in 2007). The Top 10 regions for North American mares-bred in 2008 were:

  • Kentucky: sires -4.5% (333 to 318) mares-bred -1.9% (21,724 to 21,317)
  • Florida: sires -4.3% (211 to 202) mares-bred -16.6% (6,376 to 5,316)
  • California: sires -8.6% (255 to 233) mares-bred -14.2% (4,447 to 3,817)
  • Louisiana: sires -3.4% (238 to 230) mares-bred -7% (3,780 to 3,515)
  • New York: sires -7.6% (92 to 85) mares-bred -6.5% (1,967 to 1,839)
  • Texas: sires -6.8% (205 to 191) mares-bred -11% (1,935 to 1,722)
  • New Mexico: sires -6.6% (137 to 128) mares-bred -18% (1,775 to 1,456)
  • Oklahoma: sires +5% (120 to 126) mares-bred -3.3% (1,381 to 1,335)
  • Ontario: sires +16.7% (66 to 77) mares-bred +1.2% (1,257 to 1,272)
  • Pennsylvania: sires +23.6% (72 to 89) mares-bred +31.5% (941 to 1,237)
