Monday, 20th October 2008

In the UK, former Coolmore shuttler & Gr1 English Derby winner Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) added a Gr1 triumph when last season's unbeaten European champion juvenile & this season's Gr1 English Derby-winning 3YO colt New Approach (Galileo-Park Express, by Ahonoora) slaughtered his older rivals by 6-lengths (& set a new course record of 2min 0.13sec) in the £375,000 (A$788,000) Gr1 Champion Stakes (10 furlongs) at Newmarket. Irish-bred favourite New Approach (ridden by Kevin Manning for trainer Jim Bolger) defeated fellow 3YO colt Twice Over (Observatory-Double Crossed, by Caerleon) & multiple European Gr1-winning Irish-bred 6YO entire Linngari (Indian Ridge-Lidakiya, by Kahyasi). At his previous start, New Approach had also beaten his older rivals in September's Gr1 Irish Champion Stakes (10 furlongs) at Leopardstown. New Approach (whose Gr1-winning dam Park Express has produced 7 winners, also including Japanese stakes-winning former Glenlogan Park shuttler Shinko Forest & Irish Gr3-winner Dazzling Park) was a €430,000 (A$731,000) yearling at the 2006 Goffs Million Sale; last season he notched 5 wins from 5 starts (including the UK Gr1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes over 7 furlongs at Newmarket & Irish Gr1 National Stakes over 7 furlongs at The Curragh, as well as both Ireland's Gr2 Futurity Stakes over 7 furlongs at The Curragh & Gr3 Tyros Stakes over 7 furlongs at Leopardstown). At the end of that season Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum's Darley operation bought New Approach as a stallion prospect & this year he has also finished runner-up in both May's UK Gr1 2000 Guineas (8 furlongs) at Newmarket & Irish Gr1 2000 Guineas (8 furlongs) at The Curragh, as well as most recently finishing 3rd in August's UK Gr1 Juddmonte International Stakes (10 furlongs) at Newmarket.
