Former Melb Cup Runner Distinction Retired In UK

Also in the UK, evergreen 9YO gelding Distinction (Danehill-Ivy Leaf, by Nureyev) has finally retired. This season Distinction (trained by Sir Michael Stoute) won July's UK Listed Esher Stakes (16.5 furlongs) at Sandown Park & made his final racetrack appearance in finishing 5th in the Gr3 Jockey Club at Newmarket last Saturday. Distinction was a 28,000 guineas (A$62,000) foal at the UK Tattersalls December Sale & then a subsequent 190,000 guineas (A$399,000) Goffs Sale yearling. He finished 6th in the 2004 Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) & then 19th in the 2005 Melbourne Cup. Overall he recorded 8 wins (also including 2005's Gr2 Goodwood Cup over 2 miles, 2006 Listed Aston Park Stakes over 13.5 furlongs & 2007's Listed Fenwolf Stakes over 2 miles at Ascot, plus placings in the 2005 Gr1 Ascot Gold Cup over 2.5 miles, 2005 Gr2 Lonsdale Cup over 2 miles & 2006 Gr1 Ascot Gold Cup over 2.5 miles) & earned £365,130 (A$766,000).
