Dezigna Wins NZ Gr1 Captain Cook Stakes

In New Zealand, Windsor Park Stud's 6-time champion NZ sire Volksraad (Green Desert-Celtic Assembly, by Secretariat) added a Gr1 triumph when evergreen 9YO gelding Dezigna (Volksraad-Label Basher, by Conquistarose) scored by a neck in the NZ$200,000 weight-for-age Gr1 Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) at Trentham in Wellington. Dezigna (ridden by Troy Harris for trainers Vanessa & Wayne Hills) defeated 5YO mare O'Ceirins Angel (Al Akbar-Cadell, by Yachtie) & 8YO gelding Bulginbaah (Starjo-Lady Tristimus, by Tristimus). Dezigna took his record to 11 wins (also including 2007's Listed Kelt Memorial Handicap over 1400m at Hastings, plus the previous season's Gr2 Rich Hill Mile over 1600m at Ellerslie & Listed Sportsground Sprint over 1400m Te Rapa) & 24 placings (including March's Gr1 New Zealand Stakes over 2000m at Ellerslie & both January's Gr1 Thorndon Mile over 1600m at Trentham & Gr1 Zabeel Classic over 2000m at Ellerslie, plus 2007's Gr1 Champions Mile over 1600m at Ellerslie & Gr1 Starcraft Stakes over 2000m at Ellerslie, as well as 2006's Gr1 Telegraph Handicap over 1200m at Trentham & Listed Kelt Memorial Handicap over 1400m at Hastings, in addition to 2005's Gr1 Telegraph Handicap over 1200m at Trentham & Gr2 Concorde Handicap over 1200m at Avondale) from 72 starts for $742,549 earnings.
