Goldikova Wins US Gr1 Breeders' Cup Mile

Former Widden Stud shuttler Anabaa (Danzig-Balbonella, by Gay Mecene) added a Gr1 triumph when the Werthheimer family's Irish-bred & French-trained 3YO filly Goldikova (Anabaa-Born Gold, by Blushing Groom) made it 3 successive Gr1 wins against older rivals in recent months with a 1.25-lengths victory in the US$2 million Gr1 Breeders' Cup Mile (8 furlongs on turf) at Santa Anita. Favourite Goldikova (ridden by Olivier Peslier for trainer Freddie Head) defeated 5YO entire Kip Deville (Kipling-Klondike Kaytie, by Encino) who won this race last year & fellow Irish-bred 4YO entire Whatsthescript (Royal Applause-Grizel, by Lion Cavern). Trainer Head also became the 1st person to win a Breeders' Cup World Championship race as a jockey (on Miesque in 1987 & 1988) & now as a trainer. Previously this season, Goldikova finishing 2nd in May's Gr1 Poule D'Essai Des Pouliches-French 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Longchamp & 3rd in June's Gr1 Prix de Diane-French Oaks (2100m) at Chantilly, before notching successive victories in July's Gr3 Prix Chloe (1600m) at Maisons-Laffitte, August's Gr1 Prix Rothschild (1600m) at Deauville & September's Gr1 Prix Du Moulin (1600m) at Longchamp. Overall Goldikova now has 6 wins & 3 placings from 9 starts for US$2,095,344 earnings.
