Muhannak Wins US Breeders' Cup Marathon

London-based Australian owner Richard Pegum's Irish-bred 4YO gelding Muhannak (Chester House-Opera, by Forzando) snatched victory by a head in the US$500,000 Breeders' Cup Marathon (12 furlongs on all-weather) at Santa Anita. Muhannak (ridden by Pat Smullen for trainer Ralph Beckett) defeated Gr3-winning 5YO gelidng Church Service (Pulpit-To Be Approved, by With Approval) & 7YO gelding Big Booster (Accelerator-Waterside, by Topsider). Muhannak was a 75,000 guineas (A$188,000) purchase at the 2007 UK Tattersalls November Horses-In-Training Sale. At his previous start he won last month's Irish Listed Diamond Stakes (10.5 furlongs on all-weather) at Dundalk. Overall Muhannak now has 7 wins & 3 pacings from 15 starts for US$422,675 earnings.
