Monday, 27th October 2008

Darley shuttler Elusive Quality (Gone West-Touch Of Greatness, by Hero's Honor) added a US Gr1 triumph when Princess Haya of Jordan's US-bred 3YO colt Raven's Pass (Elusive Quality-Ascutney, by Lord At War) motored down the center of the track from well back in the field to notch his 2nd successive Gr1 victory against older rivals with an upset 1.75-lengths win before 55,331 fans in the US$5 million Gr1 Breeders' Cup Classic (10 furlongs on all-weather) at Santa Anita Park in California. UK-trained Raven's Pass (ridden by Frankie Dettori for trainer John Gosden) defeated Ballydoyle's 4-time Gr1-winning fellow US-bred & Irish-trained 3YO colt Henrythenavigator (Kingmambo-Sequoyah, by Sadler's Wells) & multiple Gr1-winning 4YO entire Tiago (Pleasant Tap-Set Them Free, by Stop The Music); favoured multiple Gr1-winning 4YO entire & reigning US Horse-Of-The-Year Curlin (who won this race last year & a month ago become the all-time leading North American-raced earner when he won September's US Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park to take his winnings past $10.246 million) briefly grabbed the lead at the top of the straight, but was then swamped by the place-getters & eventually held on to finish 4th in the field of 12 runners. At his previous start, Raven's Pass won September's UK Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (8 furlongs) against older rivals at Ascot; & earlier this season he finished runner-up in June's UK Gr1 St James's Palace Stakes (8 furlongs) at Royal Ascot & then both July's French Gr1 Prix Jean Prat (1600m) at Chantilly & UK Gr1 Sussex Stakes (8 furlongs) at Goodwood, before winning August's UK Gr2 Celebration Mile (8 furlongs) at Goodwood. And during 2007 Raven's Pass won both the UK Gr3 Solario Stakes (7 furlongs) at Sandown Park & Listed Winkfield Stakes (7 furlongs) at Ascot, as well as finishing 3rd in the UK Gr1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes (7 furlongs) at Newmarket. Overall he now has 6 wins & 5 placings from 12 starts for US$3,658,556 earnings.
