Soviet Star Adds UK Gr3

Monday, 27th October 2008

Former NZ Haunui Stud shuttler Soviet Star (Nureyev-Veruschka, by Venture) added a UK black-type success when Australian owner Peter McMahon's 4YO entire Buccellati (Soviet Star-Susi Wong, by Selkirk) made it 2 successive stakes victories this month with a 1-length win in the £65,000 (A$156,000) Gr3 St Simon Stakes (12 furlongs) at Newbury. Buccellati (ridden by William Buick for trainer Andrew Balding) defeated 7YO gelding Blue Monday (Darshaan-Lunda, by Soviet Star) & 4YO mare Sell Out (Act One-Nordica, by Northfields). Back in 2005 McMahon & Australian trainer Tony Noonan made the trip to the UK seeking to buy a potential Melbourne Cup contender; they bought 2 youngsters at Tattersalls, including Buccellati for 25,000 guineas (A$62,000) & this time last year he completed a winning hat-trick with victory against older horses in the ladbrokes.com Stakes (12 furlongs) at Ascot. Overall Buccellati now has 7 wins (also including last start's Listed Godolphin Stakes over 12 furlongs at Newmarket) & a runner-up from 19 starts for £190,709 (A$457,000) earnings.
