Monday, 27th October 2008

Former Darley shuttler & Gr1 Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry (Machiavellian-Helen Street, by Troy) added a US Gr1 triumph when undefeated multiple Gr1-winning 4YO daughter Zenyatta (Street Cry-Vertigineux, by Kris S) kept her perfect record by powering from last-to-first around the home turn & racing away for a decisive 1.5-lengths victory in the US$2 million Gr1 Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (9 furlongs on all-weather) for fillies & mares at Santa Anita. Despite being 10-lengths behind the leaders with 4 furlongs to go, favourite Zenyatta (ridden by Mike Smith for trainer John Shirreffs) defeated the Godolphin stable-mates, Chilean-bred 4YO mare Cocoa Beach (Doneraile Court-Visionera, by Edgy Diplomat) & 3YO filly Music Note (A.P.Indy-Note Musicale, by Sadler's Wells). Jerry & Ann Moss's Kentucky-bred Zenyatta (a US$60,000 yearling at Keeneland in September 2005) was unraced as a juvenile; previously this season she also won the Gr2 El Encino Stakes (8.5 furlongs on all-weather) at Santa Anita in January, Gr1 Apple Blossom Handicap (8.5 furlongs) at Oaklawn Park in April, Gr2 Milady Handicap (8.5 furlongs on all-weather) at Hollywood Park in May, Gr1 Vanity Invitational Handicap (9 furlongs on all-weather) at Hollywood Park in July, Gr2 Clement Hirsch Handicap (8.5 furlongs on all-weather) at Del Mar in August & Gr1 Lady's Secret Breeders' Cup Stakes (8.5 furlongs on all-weather) at Santa Anita last start in September. Overall Zenyatta (a half-sister to multiple Gr1-winner Balance) now has 9 wins from 9 starts for US$2,144,580 earnings.
