Mandela Wins Werribee Cup

Thursday, 30th October 2008

Ill-fated 1997 Gr1 AJC Australian Derby-winning stallion Ebony Grosve (Grosvenor-Dusky Rosa, by Indian Conquest) added a black-type success when top-weighted 7YO gelding Mandela (Ebony Grosve-Wairongoa Belle, by Sea Anchor) scored a 1-length victory in yesterday's $140,000 Listed Werribee Cup (224m) at Geelong in Victoria. Mandela (ridden by Mark Zahra for trainer Mike Moroney) defeated favoured 4YO entire Imvula (Rock Of Gibraltar-African Rain, by Woodman) & 8YO mare Reggie (Germano-Crackastar, by Star Way). Mandela (a NZ$1,750 yearling at the 2003 NZ Bloodstock Summer Sale) now has 8 wins (also including 2007's Gr3 Chairman's Handicap over 2020m at Doomben & NZ Listed Evans Classic over 1670m at Pukekohe, plus 2006's Gr3 Geelong Cup over 2400m & NZ's Gr2 Avondale Guineas over 2000m as a 3YO) & 9 placings (including 2007's Gr3 Premier's Cup over 2200m at Doomben, plus runner-up in the Gr1 NZ Derby over 2400m as a 3YO) from 38 starts for $703,383 earnings.
