Waterhouse Backs Unlimited Overseas Melb Cup Entries

Thursday, 30th October 2008

However leading trainer Gai Waterhouse said the "annual invasion of overseas stayers has helped cement the Melbourne Cup's reputation as one of the world's great races & doesn't support any campaign aimed at limiting their representation," reported The Daily Telegraph. She told the newspaper: "The internationals add so much presence to the race. If we have 2 or 12 horses from overseas, it shouldn't matter. You want the best horses & if they are the best horses, then they should be in the field. When the Melbourne Cup is run, it's not just Australians who watch it. Racing people all over the world tune in. It showcases our racing on the world stage."
