STC Moves To Buy Kembla Grange

Friday, 31st October 2008

The Sydney Turf Club (custodian of Rosehill Gardens & Canterbury Park) "took the 1st formal steps towards buying Kembla Grange & forming a partnership with the Illawarra Turf Club, when representatives from both clubs met at Canterbury" on Wednesday, reported The Sydney Morning Herald. The previously-mooted partnership "was a casualty of the TVN-Sky Channel war in 2005, but the clubs started discussions about a strategic alliance again earlier this year & finally sat down together" this week. The STC "has a tacit agreement with the NSW Government to purchase the land containing Kembla Grange racecourse & both clubs are keen to push forward". ITC president Peter De Vries (who with 3 ITC directors met STC chief executive Michael Kenny & 4 STC directors) confirmed: "We had talks & want to work towards a partnership which will advance our mutual interests." The newspaper noted: "High on the agenda for any redevelopment of the site would be a synthetic racetrack inside the course proper."
