US Gr1-Winner Alwajeeha Retired To Stud
Owner-breeder Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum's Shadwell Stable home-bred 3YO filly Alwajeeha (Dixieland Band-Ridaa, by Seattle Slew) has been retired to Shadwell Farm in Kentucky. Shadwell general manager Rick Nichols told thoroughbredtimes.com that Alwajeeha (who at her previous start won the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup over 9 furlongs on turf at Keeneland on October 11) "came out of a workout with filling in an ankle & we felt like she'd done enough. We were going to take her out to California for the Gr1 Matriarch Stakes (on November 30 at Hollywood Park), but why run the risk of her getting hurt? She's already a Gr1-winner going 9 furlongs on the turf: that's what we want in our broodmare band." Previously this year Alwajeeha also won April's Gr3 Appalachian Stakes (8 furlongs on turf) at Keeneland, as well as finishing runner-up in both July's Gr2 Lake George Stakes (9.5 furlongs on turf) at Saratoga & January's Listed Tropical Park Oaks (8.5 furlongs on turf) at Calder. Overall Alwajeeha recorded 3 wins & 3 runners-up from 9 starts for US$486,927 earnings.
