2008 World Rankings: Curlin & New Approach Top

Wednesday, 14th January 2009

US Horse-Of-The-Year Curlin (Smart Strike-Sherriff's Deputy, by Deputy Minister) & English Derby winner New Approach (Galileo-Park Express, by Ahonoora) have been named joint top-rated horses (at 130) in the 2008 World Thoroughbred Rankings announced by the International Federation Of Horse Authorities. For the 1st time, the rankings cover a complete calendar year (irrespective of where individual horses raced or were trained); to merit inclusion, a horse must have been rated at 115 or above. Curlin rated 130 for his win in the 2008 Gr1 Dubai World Cup at Nad al Sheba in March & New Approach rated 130 in winning the UK Gr1 Champion Stakes at Newmarket in October. Unbeaten French filly Zarkava was the highest-rated female (128) for her win in the French Gr1 Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp.
