NSW Meeting Hears Prize-Money Under Threat

Thursday, 2nd July 2009

Meanwhile Arrowfield Stud principal John Messara emerged as spokesman from yesterday's informal meeting of influential industry participants at Racing NSW's Sydney office & was "left with the distinct impression prize-money is under threat", reported The Sydney Morning Herald. Messara said concerned participants "including breeders, owners & trainers" received an update from Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'Landys "on what was being done to stop revenue leaking from NSW to the corporate bookmakers in the territories". He noted: "It was purely a skeleton group thinking what should we be doing to help Racing NSW & the Australian Racing Board. You cannot call it a crisis meeting . . . . the next one might be." Messara revealed "a resolution was taken to host a meeting-by-invitation" with the "breadth & width" of industry participants gathering "in a bid to ensure wagering revenue becomes an Australian government issue".
