Big City Life Wins SAf Gr1 July Handicap

In South Africa emerging star 3YO colt Big City Life (Casey Tibbs-Dollar Crisis, by Goldmark) headed a 3YO clean sweep in the R3 million (A$472,000) Gr1 July Handicap (2200m) by 0.75-length at Greyville in Durban. Big City Life (ridden by Greg Cheyne for trainer Glen Kotzen) defeated 3YO filly Zirconeum (Jallad-Sweet Sheila, by Kenmare) & 3YO gelding Forest Path (Fort Wood-Money Trail, by Northern Guest). Runner-up Zirconeum's Australian-bred dam Sweet Sheila is a daughter of Joint 2nd Top 1989/90 2YO Australasian Filly Paklani (placed in the Gr1 STC Golden Slipper & Gr1 VATC Oakleigh Plate). In addition to Gr1 Woolavington 2000 Stakes (Greyville) winner Zirconeum (who now has 5 Gr1 placings), Sweet Sheila is also the dam of Gr1 Merchants (Turffontein) winner Stellite. July winner Big City Life took his career record to 7 wins & 3 placings from 12 starts for R3,330,625 (A$524,000) earnings.
