US Betting Turnover Shows Significant Drop
The US thoroughbred industry is facing a significant slide in betting turnover with a concomitant knock-on impact to prizemoney. "Total wagering handle declined by 16.9% in June, according to economic indicators released Sunday by Equibase Co," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. The alarming statistics show that, "In 2008, total handle declined by more than US$1-billion. Through the first six months of 2009 total handle is down US$761,405,470." The number of race dates has also fallen which contributes to the cycle.
