Quarantine Red Light For Japanese Horses

Wednesday, 8th July 2009

Meanwhile, Racing Victoria racing operations manager Leigh Jordon told Sky Sports Radio that there will be no Japanese representation in this year's Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) in November. Jordan commented, "Unfortunately the bio-security officials informed me that basically the Japan situation they want to treat the same as their import risk assessment for all countries. That being the case the process of import risk assessment is out for consultation and they believe it will be finalised somewhere towards the end of the year or early next year." With Delta Blues & Pop Rock running 1-2 in the 2006 Melbourne Cup (the last time Japan was represented in the race), Jordan expressed frustration at the time it was taking to get a resolution: "It's disappointing because we started discussions with them on this in July 2008 and it doesn't look like we'll have it resolved until the spring of next year."
