US-bred 4YO entire Big City Man (Northern Afleet-Mini Appeal, by Valid Appeal), who defeated US champion female sprinter Indian Blessing (Indian Charlie-Shameful, by Flying Chevron) in this year's Gr1 Dubai Golden Shaheen, died on July 5 of a strangulated cecum. The death occurred "several hours after a six-furlong work in 1:13.40 at Hollywood Park," reported bloodhorse.com. Trainer Jeff Mullins said that the colt showed signs of distress and underwent surgery later that day, but that the cecum could not be repaired. Overall Big City Man recorded 6 wins from 8 starts including January's Gr3 Al Shidagha Sprint over 1200m at Nad Al Sheba, plus 2007's US Listed Criterium Stakes over 6 furlongs at Calder & Listed Dr Fager Stakes over 6 furlongs at Calder) & 2 runners-up including March's Gr3 Mahab Al Shimaal over 1200m at Nad Al Sheba for US$1,521,505 earnings. Owned by Prince Sultan Mohammed bin Saud al Kabeer, Big City Man's earnings ranked him 4th among horses raced in the UAE for this season.
