Leading US 3YO Succumbs To Injury

Friday, 10th July 2009

In the US, Gr1 Futurity-winning 3YO colt Pioneerof the Nile (Empire Maker-Star Of Goshen, by Lord At War) "has been retired due to a soft tissue injury to his left front leg," reports bloodhorse.com. Trained by Bob Baffert for the powerful stable of Egyptian brewing magnate Ahmed Zayat, Pioneerof the Nile won 4 consecutive graded stakes events in the US & finished runner-up in May's Gr1 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Baffert commented: "We noticed a little filling in his leg when we took the bandages off and we were hoping he just rapped it. I'm in shock. I was getting so excited about that horse. I loved the way he had been training. He was getting stronger with age and was just starting to mature... He put me back in the classic spotlight."
