Injury Forces US Gr1 Winner's Retirement

Tuesday, 14th July 2009

Meanwhile, US Gr1 winner 4YO Monba (Maria's Mon-Hamba, by Easy Goer) has been forced into retirement as the result of sustaining an injury to his left hind leg. According to bloodhorse.com, the Todd Pletcher-trained won the 2008 Gr1 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland prior to a last place finish in the Kentucky Derby at the end of his 3YO season. Although without a win from 4 starts as a 4YO this season, Monba finished 3rd in the Gr3 Ben Ali Stakes at Keeneland in April. In what would prove to be his last start, he finished 5th in the Gr2 Dixie Stakes at Pimlico in his turf debut. Monba retires to stud with 3 wins from his 10 starts for US$669,034 earnings. There is yet to be an announcement on where the $200,000 2006 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale graduate will stand at stud.
